This 20,000 square foot educational facility was designed as a “campus within a campus,” which functions as a child-care center and educational research facility for the faculty and students of the College of Education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The result is an educational village that both meets the needs of the client and fosters a unique sense of place within the larger university campus. The design features separate classroom buildings for a variety of age groups, a multipurpose/kitchen building, research classrooms, and an administrative center. By reading down the institutional scale of the overall project into smaller, more accessible buildings, each structure gains an individual identity, which fosters a greater sense of ownership on the part of the students and staff. The overall design strategy, which included private outdoor classroom gardens and a large “public green space,” was described by the jurors of the 2004 Nevada AIA Design Awards program as “simple” yet “fun and fanciful.” Additionally, the integration of interior and exterior classroom and play-spaces were cited as offering as lessons for future school designers.
