1st Place—2001 Invited Competition Entry, University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Owner: The University of Nevada, Las Vegas
Location: University of Nevada Las Vegas Campus
Project Type: Educational & Research Facility
Budget/Cost: $4.5 Million
Completed in 2004

This 20,000 square foot educational facility was designed as a “campus within a campus,” which functions as a child-care center and educational research facility for the faculty and students of the College of Education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.  The result is an educational village that both meets the needs of the client and fosters a unique sense of place within the larger university campus.  The design features separate classroom buildings for a variety of age groups, a multipurpose/kitchen building, research classrooms, and an administrative center.  By reading down the institutional scale of the overall project into smaller, more accessible buildings, each structure gains an individual identity, which fosters a greater sense of ownership on the part of the students and staff.  The overall design strategy, which included private outdoor classroom gardens and a large “public green space,” was described by the jurors of the 2004 Nevada AIA Design Awards program as “simple” yet “fun and fanciful.”  Additionally, the integration of interior and exterior classroom and play-spaces were cited as offering as lessons for future school designers.  This project was completed in association with assemblageSTUDIO.  For more information about assemblageSTUDIO, please visit assemblagestudio.com.

Owner: City of Mesquite, NV
Location: Mesquite, NV
Project Type: Art / Cultural Facility
Budget/Cost: $800,00.00
Completed in 2003

This 5,000 square foot cultural facility is an addition to an existing art center that dates to the 1930’s.  The project reflects the vernacular architecture of the region and the historically rooted courtyard traditions of the early Spanish and Mormon settlers.  In order to minimize the addition’s impact upon the site and in order to avoid overshadowing the existing historic structure, the program of the art center was broken down into small components organized around a central court, which serves as spill-over exhibition, event, or social space.  The new buildings add to the existing heritage museum a feature gallery, classroom spaces, artist studio, and a gallery/administration block.  The project was praised by the design awards jury for avoiding simplistic Spanish colonial historical motifs often found in the area, which related not to Nevada but to the California’s mission legacy, and for seeking a regional approach focused upon the native materials and forms of region.  This project was completed in association with assemblageSTUDIO.  For more information about assemblageSTUDIO, please visit assemblagestudio.com.

Central Desert Facility

Owner: University of Nevada, Las Vegas
Location: Las Vegas
Project Type: Educational Facility (Temporary)
Budget/Cost: On-going project
Completed in 2003 (phase I)

This “temporary” classroom facility was developed to house various departments  while building renovations take place across the UNLV campus.   Initially commissioned as a site-planning project for the location of prefabricated trailer units, the design was transformed into a “long-term” temporary mini-campus project. Campus renovations plans called for the use of “swing space” over the course of 8 to 10 years in order to accommodate existing classroom needs.  Given this long-term need, our design proposal aimed to an architecture with both a short life cycle and a high degree of design investment. By grouping prefabricated units around new courtyards and out-door classrooms, this project transforms the anonymous classroom trailer into academic quads.  Prefabricated modular units were commissioned and delivered to the site without exterior cladding.  Final exterior finishes were then installed on site using a variety of materials, which give each building a sense of identity.  Desert sensitive landscape compliments the site planning.  This project was completed in association with assemblageSTUDIO.  For more information about assemblageSTUDIO, please visit assemblagestudio.com.

This 1800 sq.ft. studio / classroom and research facility was developed to house the curricular needs of the Master of Urban Design Program in the School of Architecture at UNC Charlotte.  The location is also home to the former Charlotte Community Design Studio, which has been transformed into inter-disciplinary research venue, the Design + Society Research Center.  The center and the MUD program both serve the region as the pubic outreach arms of the College and School.  The project was design with the help of Shook Kelley Architects with Cox Schepp serving as the construction team.  For more information on the MUD program, please visit: www.coa.uncc.edu/mud/masters_of_urban_design/mud_home.html
